Red Velvet First Attempt

So today I attempted to make a red velvet cake, I'd never done of of these before and their always nice when I have them so hopefully mine will match ;)

My ingredients are.

Hot chocolate drinking powder

Self raising flour

Baking powder

Vanilla frosting

Brown sugar

Red food coloring

White sugar

2 eggs

Softened butter

I already knew how to make the basic base using the sugar and butter, I like making unique flavors so I used half of my brown sugar and half white sugar, I prefer brown sugar as it has more of a strong flavor and a more nuttier taste.

The brown sugar was quite lumpy so in future I'll definitely be using a sieve, I creamed the sugar and butter together then added the eggs. After that I added a pinch of salt, the coco powder, baking soda and flour. Lastly was the food colouring.

As the mixture was quite dark because of the chocolate I had to put loads of food colouring in. The first batch didn't go as red as I would have liked but ah well there's always next time.
I noticed the top of the first cake had visible lumps on the top which was annoying, the second one was fine with a nice road dome shape.

I then crumb coated the two bases and left them to chill for about 15 minutes, when they was cool I covered them with the vanilla frosting I would have put loads more on it now as it's barely noticeable - lesson learned drench it in frosting!

I'm really proud of my first attempt at a red velvet cake, I know it looks terrible but I really like it and it tasted fab! Next time I will write down everything I do before hand so I know what to follow and how much of something to put in to the point. As the sponges are two different shades of red/brown.

The top crumb coat failed a bit like and the knife ripped a bit off from the top but the two bases are at least roundish better then my first cake so I'm improving slowly but steady baby steps!

Lessons learned!

What I learned about 2014

 Life is to short
In 2014 there was a lot of upset on the news and stuff, innocent people dying everyday from, wars, terrorists or cancer. It taught me that life is far to short and you never know what is round the corner. As cheesy as it sounds you mustn't take the people you love, and the people who love you for granted.

Most people are fake

I recently seen a quote which I instantly liked it was 'throughout the ages of 16-22 you meet a lot of temporary people, which is so true. New friends come in and out of life on a monthly basis, I've had loads and only a small number have actually stuck around. I think the problem is more you see them everyday for let's say 5 months and you think their your friend, when actually their just someone to you work with.

It's okay to be different

I've been told by people that what I'm doing for my age isn't normal. That I should be out every weekend, spend my money on hair extensions and fake tan, while I appreciate some people are into that stuff I am not. Over the past year I've learnt there's nothing wrong with have different interests and hobbies to other people in fact it's what makes everyone so unique. My idea of fun is reading a book, or going for a meal with friends does that make it wrong?

No it doesn't.

England is dreadful

Having watched the news and read lots of articles about this country, it's actually depressing. More tax's are going out to fat people who are costing the NHS billions every year, cause they love takeaways too much  and people who abuse the benefit system. David Cameron needs to sorttt it.

The future

I actually have some idea of what I want to do with my life and a plan to go with it, my plan A is to have my own business as cake decorator. To do that I'll go to uni and study marketing/advertising build up my skills in 4 years and start the business.

First Attempt

So last night with a little help from my boyf we decided to make a cake, nothing special just a Victoria Sponge. I wanted to do this because one of my life ambitions is to become a cake decorator and have my own business. After nipping to the shops to get some ingredients (self raising flour, baking soda, jam and icing sugar with sprinkles) We researched recipes online and found one which was okay.

Here's what we used.

It's safe to say we have a long way to go before we're considered 'okay' after making a mess of the bases, the icing was nice though! Will defiantly be using that recipe again it tasted lovely and sugary but it wasn't too overpowering just a nice hint of sweetness.

In the future I'll be using parchment paper for sure and learning how to remove the cakes from the tin without butchering it. I am also going to start experimenting with different flavors my favorite is Red Velvet. I've also decided to dedicate one day a week to baking and making new stuff and learning and making loads of mistakes.

Think next week I might make Smoore's as they are gorgeous and not as popular in England or a chocolate cake the choices are endless.

Time to show our very bad first attempt it can only get better, she says in hope!

New Year

Haven't blogged in a while because I lost all motivation for it, but as it's a new year I'm going to try my best to blog more frequently, as well as bake and discover new beauty products.
I always say every year I'm going to more healthy and loose weight but this year I actually am going to stick by it. Ideally I'd like to loose a stone or just under as the weight I'm at now I don't think is healthy for me to be.

New year, new me (hopefully)
